New Homes That Are Pet Friendly

My wife has a compelling urge to rescue animals.  After 16 years of marriage, we have 3 cats, 2 dogs and 2 horses. So out of necessity, I had to learn how to design and build a new home that is pet friendly.

Let me share with you what I have learned.

  1. You need hard surface floors that still will look good when it is time to sell. My favorite is a hand scraped wood floor light in color. The reason are first light colors do not show marks or wear as much as darker floors. Second , hand scrapes are uneven and irregular so when something dose happen to the wood floor , it just blends in the rest of the unevenness of the floor. If fact , the more wear , the better it looks.
  2. What About a Pet Zone? A pet zone is area where you can store your pets food, water , leashes , kennel and or any other equipment needed.  Think about
    1. locating in the rear where you let you pet out.
    2. a hard surface in that area.
    3. a pet shower to risen your pet off before he tracts all that mud into the home.
    4. Think about a product made by Solo that is a remote control pet door that opens every time your pet needs to go out.
    5. If you are going to replace your carpet, use  a low pile carpet.
    6. Indoors animals like to lay in the sun light. So plan for natural light infiltration with your placement of windows.
    7. Believe it or not , there is a manufacture who makes Murphy Beds for pets.

Whether you are an animal love or married to one , do not forget to plan for your pet the next time you plan to build a new home.

Good luck building your new home or buying a new home. If I can help you in any way or answer any question you may have about
