In August of 2006, American Heartland embarked on a once in a lifetime journey to help a young firefighter's widow (Maryann) and her six children in Armada, Michigan. The Gilliam's 100 year old farmhouse had tested postive for a mold infestation. Maryann's husband tragically died on Christmas Eve after putting many hours into repairing the home. After 53 hours we were able to complete her husband's dream of a safe, new home for the Gilliam family.
Around two years later in July of 2008, American Heartland owner Rick Merlini and a crew of dedicated partners and friends were able to complete a second Extreme Makeover house, this time for the King family. The King's home, which also serves as an affordable daycare in their community, had many issues. The King's daughter had been rushed to the hospital several times as a result of a mold infestation, and the daycare may have been shut down as a result of some structural problems. American Heartland was able to complete a new home with daycare for the family.
We hope you enjoy sharing in our memories from these two special events.
